This 2001 segment from Dateline NBC highlights my book “Beauty Bites Beast,” and an IMPACT Personal Safety Kids Basics class. The video features kids learning to stay safe from bullies, predators and others in “real world” scenarios, and shows how surprisingly strong girls are and how quickly they can learn to defend themselves with some simple, proven techniques. Besides self-defense, the kids are also taught how to set boundaries, and to say “no” to someone who may want to do inappropriate things to them. I believe that kids should learn personal safety at about the same time they learn fire drills and how to cross the street safely. This video also offers compelling evidence that learning personal safety and self-defense while at a young age can give kids — especially girls — self-confidence that will stay with them through their adulthood.
