Bruce Lee’s Adventures in Oakland

Before his career in Hollywood began, Bruce Lee owned and operated a small kung-fu studio in Downtown Oakland. Lee brought together different styles of martial arts and opened his classes to western students, alarming the Bay Area’s Chinese community. Lee was issued a now famous challenge and ultimatum by a representative, Wong Jak Man, who demanded that Lee stop teaching martial arts to Caucasians or close the school down. Lee settled the dispute in less than a minute, securing his right to teach whomever he pleased. As a result of this duel, Lee became committed to developing Jeet Kune Do, aka the Way of the Intercepting Fist – a form of fighting not bound by styles

For a 2:35 second video, the first 50 seconds being two intros is kind of extreme.

these are the exact wors from bruce interwiew with blackbelt after the match:”I’d gotten into a fight in San Francisco with a Kung-Fu cat, and after a brief encounter the son-of-a-bitch started to run. I chased him and, like a fool, kept punching him behind his head and back. Soon my fists began to swell from hitting his hard head. Right then I realized Wing Chun was not too practical and began to alter my way of fighting

  7. haanhasa says:

exactly, what was the point of bruce is to liberate from styles to concuer it all

  8. haanhasa says:

jesse glover was a bruces first student and this wong jak man is a grand master of jing wu school but hes old ways of kungfu only to chinese changed after he took a good beating from bruce whom he challenged from question of teaching others and now after this wong claim that the fight was newer for this issue and teach others and what goes to ip chuns book telling bruce wanted to bribe ipman and thus jkd. jkd is wt taked real life events and bruces succes made ip chung to bery crudge

KWANSAO: You are another human being who doesn’t understand the JKD concepts about knowing “styles”. Just study man! or dedicate your life to study a style, but study hard till death man cause you’ll be a hidden cadaver following that way.

  10. RodrigoReinante says:

KWANSAO: I readed Glover’s book and he says Bruce Lee thought one had to go out of the styles which want to surpasses, so this is Bruce has done..go out of any style to have all. FUCK YOU

Wow, this shit is dope. Is this from a clip from a longer project about Bruce’s Oakland Adventures? Or is this 2 min video the actual video. Either way, it’s dope.

How is learning butterfly swords and the pole pertinant to hand to hand combat? As you know people don’t walk around with swords or poles used tonpush boats anymore, so what difference does it make?

  13. kwansao says:

Bruce Lee’s progress in Wing Chun:

    Siu Nim Tao: Learned
Chum Kiu: Taught partially from Wong Shun Leung
    Biu Jee: Not Learned
Mook Yan Jong: Movements 1-40 from WSL
    Baat Jam Do: not learned
Luk Dim Boon Guwn: not learned

Bruce did not complete the system.

“my story” is based on a book written by ip chun called 116 wooden dummy techniques and from jesse glover’s book from “wing chun to jeet kune do”

and my opinion of bruce lee’s chi sao and trapping hands footage is that it’s fast.

jesse glover learned wing chun/jun fan gung fu from bruce lee. unless you’re calling him a liar. i don’t know what you are getting at.

  15. JKDBucuresti says:

Glover is a little nervous because he never learn JKD from Bruce Lee and he cannot teach = cannot make money.. sad but true

  16. JKDBucuresti says:

we have linda’s story, glover story (we can beleive or not…), now your story… and other story’s. But we can see Bruce Lee footage: he have an excellent level in Wing Chun, that’s for sure.

  17. kwansao says:

caldwell’s version of this is known publicly. she has spread the notion that this fight is why he gave up wing chun. i wasn’t there, but this seems unlikely. bruce offended ip man, by attempting to bribe Ip to teach him the entire system. he did not practice with the other wing chun stylists in the US at that time and his development in WC mainly consisted of ways to shortcut development in that style, according to glover’s book. he was never able to surpass his seniors such as wong shun leung.

  19. MarkRocchio says:

Funny how Linda Lee’s account of the fight contradicts her “movie” version.

  20. WestSideCoolidge says:

She mention Wong Jak Man i think in the Dragon the bruce lee story(the making of)

  21. cremefresche says:

U guys should show where his original Oakland school was! I think it was somewhere off Broadway in Chinatown?

  22. MarkRocchio says:

Linda Lee never mentions Wong Jak Man by name when recounting her version.

  23. 47cullis says:

No, this is footage of a fight on a roof top in Hong Kong not involving Bruce Lee

  24. tonyhonyilo says:
